George Ault (1891-1948), Hudson Street, 1932, oil on canvas at the whitneymuseum

This scene shows an elevated view of a neighborhood in the West Village, perhaps painted out of the artist's window. This painting is classic Precisionist with clear and nearly uniform colors and clear geometric shapes. Also, the city is stripped of most human elements. There is a lone car on the street, which seems strange even for 1932 and you can see signs in the shop but you cannot make them out. It seems like the middle of the day though not much is happening here. There is a harsh beauty to this work.

Glenn Coleman (1887-1932), Street Scene, Lower Manhattan, c. 1930, oil on canvas in private collection

Coleman was one of the important members of the Ashcan inner circle, a star.student of Robert Henri. You can consider him as part of the second generation of urban realiists. To me, he is one of my favorites from his generation, and an artist who seems to have fallen into forgotten land. Sadly, much of his life he was plagued by depression and alcoholism as well as poverty. Life was rough as an artist for most as it can be these days. Coleman felt it hard.

This painting of Lower Manhattan shows a couple on the sidewalk next to a yellow car that gives a real sense of the time of the piece. It's early in the evening and Coleman captures the light well, showing that some of the store fronts are still alive and others have turned off their lights for the night. This painting sold for $5000 in 2021 at swanngalleries

Lucio Fontana
Concetto Spaziale, Attese
1965

Lucio Fontana was an Argentine-Italian artist known as the founder of Spatialism. The movement focused on the spatial qualities of sculpture and paintings with the goal of breaking through the two-dimensionality of the traditional picture plane.

He was best known for his monochrome canvases known as Concetti Spaziale that he would cut or puncture, leaving distinctive gaping slash marks and holes that imbued the finished work with an almost violent energy.

Armin Landeck (1905-1984), Stuyvesant Alley, 1940, tempera painting at the brooklynmuseum

Landeck was born in Wisconsin and was based out of NYC and CT most of his life. He is one of the most talented etchers in American history (in our humble opinion) and collaborated with another master printmaker Martin Lewis in forming a school for printmakers.

We've been interested in Landeck's painted work as it seems rarely seen and it is nice to see some color in an artist that is nearly always seen in black and white. This tempera painting still showcases Landeck's penchant for showing the hidden parts of buildings, in this case an alley.

I stepped outside on a sunny day to find False Spring in full force. I found a place to stand with the sun on my back and the light on my page. I always liked this sign and its simplicity. ROLLING PRESS. WE PRINT STUFF.

For once, I’m prepared for the cold air. My page dries fast with some alcohol in my water cup. Not much is happening on Denton Place. Cars search for parking spots. A neighbor eyes me suspiciously as she checks for mail and slips her keys in the door. I’m out of indigo and moonglow so the shadows today are deep turquoise.

I woke up to snow on the ground, snow on the rooftops, snow clinging to branches, snow piled up on power lines.

By the afternoon it was sliding from the rooftops and blowing off the branches. The power lines were bare.

Across the backyard, someone tossed a snowball from a high balcony. It ricocheted and rattled on a metal canopy below.

A hose was running, draped over a wooden fence, melting the snow on the parking lot next door.

The sun emerged from the clouds, blinding for a moment, then passed behind the clouds again.

I painted from a second floor window, hurrying to capture the blue shadows thrown on the icy ground.

We have seen a lot of his printmaking work (and posted a fair amount of it on this page), though we are relatively unfamiliar with his paintings. This scene is wonderful and captures the mood of the city with a few people on the streets though the city has a pleasantly empty feeling about it.

This painting sold two days ago at lelandlittleauctions for $3200. We hope a museum or follower of our page won it!

I painted the Smith-9th Street Station on a Friday afternoon. It might be the tallest train station in the world. They built it that way so tall ships could pass below it.

I didn’t see any boats on the Gowanus Canal yesterday. Just sunset on the Brooklyn skyline. Trains overhead. Cars crossing the 9th Street bridge. Trucks pulling in and out of the Lowe’s parking lot. Palettes layed out with all sorts of construction materials. Tarps and sheet metal and a junkyard of shipping containers. A line of four perfectly polished Teslas pulling returning to the dealership.

I held tight to my page in the cold wind. I would have liked to get the steel beams and the shadows just right but I didn’t really have the energy to finish. I said good enough and hurried home to get warm.
