#RecentAcquisition ✨ Deborah Brown`s "Poseidon" (2022), transports viewers to the Huntington Art Museum and Botanical Gardens, a frequent destination in the artist’s childhood and a major influence on her aesthetics.
In this work from the artist`s (b.1955, Pasadena, CA) shadow series, a human figure and dog encounter spectral sculptures looming over dense thatches of pink and green. Neoclassical in both style and subject matter, they harken to an era when American titans of industry asserted their newly aristocratic pedigrees through the shorthand of classical civilization.
These sculptures, which once populated the mansion of the museum’s namesake, have been transformed from private property into public art. Given the historical centrality of art in establishing wealth and status in this upstart nation, the small transgressions of Brown’s observer— filching both images and inspiration from sumptuous surroundings—provide a vicarious thrill.
The verdant painting is remarkable in its powers of observation and of possibility. The silhouettes encourage viewers to study the painted scene as though they are the shadowy figures.
This work was donated to ICA Miami in honor of The 365 Party and its honorees, Stefanie and Evan J Reed. "It has been on my wish list for some time to have my work in the collection of the ICA Miami. Thanks to your support and the generosity and enthusiasm of Mary and Howard Frank, Andrew Reed, and Gavlak Gallery, my dream has come true! I am thrilled to be part of the permanent collection." – DeborahBrownArt

#SceneAtTheFrost Last week, we welcomed students and families from sweetwater_elementary for the opening reception for the sixth-annual Power of Art Museum, which displays the students’ artwork inspired by exhibitions they visited at the Frost Art Museum throughout their school year. Students proudly acted as docents and guided their parents, family, and friends through the Discovery Gallery to provide details and inspirations behind their work. We are proud to support Sweetwater Elementary and have their students’ art on view for the next week!
