Dana Schutz’ current exhibit, Jupiter’s Lottery, at David Zwirner in New York is her first with the galley, and it coincides with her survey at the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris, which I just had the privilege of seeing
The title of the exhibition is a reference to Aesop`s fable, which tells a story emphasizing the idea that `the greatest fools have always regarded themselves as the wisest men.`
Pictured is the work, Table Scene (2022)

An echo, a stain’ is Emma McIntyre’s first solo show in NYC, and is on view at David Zwirner’s upper east side location
In a number of works in the show, McIntyre has included flora and fauna symbols, specifically that of a crane, which is tribute to Robert Rauschenberg who used an image of a crane in various works of his in the 80’s.

Ida Applebroog, 93, has passed away. If you haven’t seen it, I’d highly recommend Beth B’s portrait of her mother “Call Her Applebroog” (2016), available on Amazon and other streaming sites. It was shown in conjunction with the artist’s solo exhibition “Applebroog Birds” at Hauser and Wirth in fall 2020. B’s film explains a lot about the artist’s background: Ida Applebaum was the daughter of illiterate Orthodox Jewish immigrant parents whose religiosity had a repressive effect on her. Painfully shy, she married and became Ida Horowitz, had four kids, and at age 40 suffered a nervous breakdown that landed her in the psych ward of Mercy Hospital in San Diego. Upon release, she changed her name to Applebroog, left the family, announced her intention to become an artist, and moved to NYC. Beth was only fourteen at the time. The daughter’s deeply personal account, shot over a 15-year period, is an attempt to document and understand her mother. The film reveals, yet withholds—it contains huge gaps that must have been topics deemed out of bounds. Applebroog is a reluctant subject and moody as hell despite Beth’s good-natured attempts to coax her mother to be more forthcoming. The tension between them is at times palpable—as if the film might go off the rails at any moment. A viewer can’t help but respect Applebroog’s incredible artistic achievements given the grim circumstances of her upbringing. Her art became a form of therapy: fiercely confessional, feminist, and political. The film comes across as a loving portrait, but, on a personal level, Applebroog, can be trying at times. For Beth B, making the film was also therapeutic. She told an interviewer: “A lot of my films are about speaking certain truths that have been hidden or shamed out of us. By speaking the words it’s a cathartic experience for us individually, and for the people sitting and watching.” #hauserwirth #idaapplebroog #feminist #feministart #feministartist #multimedia #multimediaart #indiefilm #nycart #nycartist

Art viewing is an always proactive experience for me in that I reflect my own memory, experience and knowledge when I am seeing art. However, it was a bit different experience to view Njideka Akunyili Crosby’s works as there are cues of artist’s own memories and experiences shown underneath perfectly poised figure of herself in the picture. If you look closely, there are collaged images of her homeland Nigeria underneath the main figures. One example is an image of protesters to the Nigerian government against the Chibok schoolgirls kidnapping. This event in the homeland might left a lasting trauma to artist and the image from the newspaper or magazine is shown near the child she is holding. Instead of reflecting my own memory or viewpoint, I am following the artist’s by seeing the clues…
Please invest time viewing this exhibition if you will have a chance to visit! Relevant or not, you will have a special experience going through another person’s memory lane and can see the past and present in one picture - it’s a beautiful experience, I promise 🤍

Really enjoyed seeing these remarkable paintings by visionary artist Tetsuya Ishida at Gagosian Gallery. The hybrid bodies that populate his “self-portraits of other people” are both uncanny and prescient of current times.
These works reference his experience as part of the “Employment Ice Age Generation” during Japan’s “Lost Decade” following the excessive speculation and overinflated land values at the end of the 1980s.
1) “Body Fluids” (2004) acrylic and oil on canvas (52 x 59 cm.)
2) “Gripe” (1996) acrylic on board (61 x 44 cm.)
3) “Gripe” (1997) acrylic on canvas mounted on board (62 x 79 cm.)
4) “Cargo” (1997) acrylic on board (103 x 145 cm.)
5) “Distance” (1999) acrylic on board (210 x 150 cm.)
6) “Restless Dream” (1996) acrylic on panel (163 x 120 cm.)
7) “Sleeping Pill Bug” (1995) acrylic on board (90 x 120 cm.)

Lari Pittman`s latest exhibition at Lehmann Maupin Gallery showcases eight new works of fictional cities, each prominently featuring an egg motif throughout
This motif serves as a feminine counterpoint to the dominant masculine architectural elements found in most major city skylines, such as obelisks and towers.
Pictured is the largest work in the show, measuring 33 ft in length
