Ghost signs on the side of an East Broadway lumber yard. I painted to the sounds of Saturday morning.

Singing from the Temple behind me. A steady stream of families climbing the steps, walking in and out of the door.

A few stop to talk. “Did you pick this up on your own?” “Hey, I’ll buy that off you.”

An elderly man glances at the page. He smiles and keeps walking. His wife, trailing behind, gestures to the building. “He knows it! He knows it!”

A mom pushes her son in a stroller. He holds on like a race car driver. “BEEP BEEP!”

Voices of people passing by.

“Do you have any agonies?”

“No, he doesn’t drink. He doesn’t gamble at all. He don’t do nothing!”

“I don’t know. I don’t see it, but…everyone sees something different.”

I'd spent the morning inside painting, but somehow that wasn't enough, so I finished a breakfast burrito and walked to the corner of Canal and Essex.

I'd wanted to capture this spot since my first visit to New York, but somehow it always escaped me. Not today. I spent the afternoon painting the PAINTS sign of M. Schames and Son.

Surely there's no better time in New York than September. Kids played in the park behind me. Strollers and skateboards and delivery trucks rolled by in front of me. Old men leaned on railings and sat on benches.

Who was M. Schames anyway? I looked him up later on. Mendel Schames, born in Russia in 1876. He left Latvia two days before Christmas and arrived in New York on the fourth day of 1914. He opened the paint shop on Essex Street in 1927.

The store looked empty. The online listing read "Temporarily Closed." Still, four generations later M. Schames is still in the neighborhood, just a few blocks up on Delancey Street. And that bamboo forest next door isn't an empty lot, it's a cactus shop. There's a story behind every sign in the city.
