2021 Members Show winner Carrie Ann Baade describes herself as steward and axman returning to the haunting moments in art history in order to reclaim them. By using the “bone yard” of Western painting with reverence she cuts them up into fragments resulting in collage. In their repainting these are fierce feminist parables. Paintings made of paintings the old masterworks are infused with the artist’s own experience.

Terrie Corbett has a passion for a unique medium called encaustic – paint produced by combining pigment with hot wax. This ages-old technique although somewhat difficult to control is becoming more popular today. It lends itself to luminous color that create vibrant masterpieces like those included in the exhibition Beyond the Familiar on display in the Munroe Family Community Gallery.
Corbett refers to her approach to painting with encaustic as “improvisational expressive and intuitive. . . a visual jazz if you will. I feel that my paintings range from exuberant enthusiasm to quiet reflection.” Her compositions are sometimes filled with fluid tranquil organic forms and sometimes create dynamic energy using geometric shapes. Her art offers viewers the opportunity to explore up-close the symphony of colors and unique textures produced by Corbett’s skillful knowledge of working with paint produced with cold and hot wax. This exhibition includes many paintings from her Color of Music series.
Corbett has received countless awards and solo exhibition opportunities for her work including the first-place prize for an encaustic painting the 32nd Art in Gadsden: Regional Exhibition of Fine Art in 2020. Image: Terrie Corbett Singing From the Windows 2019 oil and wax 12 x 16 inches.

Venvi Art Gallery is pleased to present “Spectrum” a solo exhibition by local artist Dan Taylor. Returning for his fifth solo show with Venvi Taylor is bringing a new focus to this body of work by exploring and celebrating humanity’s wide spectrum of diversity through colorful abstract compositions.
The wide array of colors textures and compositions that make up the show is inspired by the artist’s contemplations on the world and our society. This embrace of diversity shows Taylor’s appreciation for all of mankind and a celebration of our uniqueness. The past few years have brought a lot of these differences to the surface and sometimes it’s hard to remember our shared humanity; but Taylor hopes that as you peruse the walls filled with his diverse body of work you are reminded of the beauty that is in everyone.
Dan Taylor’s work varies greatly in the exhibition but a clear through-line is his attention to color. In the piece titled “Spectrum” one can see the process and intentionality of color used. As the piece moves from left to right the color starts off a bright yellow-green and slowly transitions into a rich cool-toned green with streaks of mint and sap green emerging in the middle. Paired with the calming gradient in this piece are the distinct vertical brush strokes that lead the eye up and down the height of the painting. This careful attention to color as well as the use of distinct textures serve as connecting elements throughout all the works in his exhibition.
Influenced by curiosity and the need to explore Taylor creates his paintings with a passion for the art-making process. His work makes it clear that he creates with a focused yet playful attitude that allows him to explore the materiality of the paint through thick brushstrokes paint splatter and palette knives. Taylor is further influenced by abstract expressionism and the works of Jackson Pollock and Gerhard Richter.
Originally from Newton Illinois Dan Taylor has been a part of the Tallahassee community for many years. Last fall he became the Chair for the Tallahassee Council on Culture and Arts and was presented with the LeMoyne Arts Richard L. Puckett Leadership in the Arts Award. Recently his work “Powdered Flowers” was selected for the 2021 Creative Tallahassee Exhibition in City Hall and was selected into their permanent collection.

Gadsden Arts is pleased to exhibit work by William Hugh “Bill” McKeown a fifth-generation North Floridian who has a high regard for the people and places of this region. He lives on the farm in Quincy Florida where he grew up and has vivid memories of hunting fishing and working in the fields and barns there. From an early age McKeown was taught to preserve and respect the land and its beauty and this has inspired his way of seeing and depicting the world around him.
Pondering the Panhandle is an exhibition of McKeown’s paintings that explores over a decade of his work in this area. His use of realism helps the viewer to immerse themselves in the lives of residents of North Florida. His subjects are usually in the middle of an action like pulling a net out of the water reading a book or gardening in some day-to-day scene. McKeown captures landscapes that are often passed by without notice and people going about daily chores. These unassuming scenes show off the loveliness of the artist’s surroundings with unparalleled attention to detail.
William McKeown has received numerous awards for his paintings in exhibitions across the United States and he has been given signature status of several prestigious Watercolor Societies. Image: William McKeown Joe 2017 watercolor 23 x 27 inches.
