"I don’t think that all my jokes are necessarily funny, but I treat them as just another subject matter."

TEFAF New York (tefaf) kicks off today at Park Avenue Armory! Stop by booth 350 to see Gagosian`s special presentation of works by Richard Prince, Jeff Koons, and Peter Halley.
Prince’s "All I’ve Heard," pictured here, from the "Monochromatic Jokes" series (initiated in 1987), nods to the conventions of Conceptual art and Color Field painting in its composition of sans serif letters laid out with tight margins on a green ground. Produced as the Cold War came to an end, the painting’s deadpan punchline underscores Prince’s wit, its humor premised on the coexistence of potential apocalypse and lived banality. Follow the link in our bio for more information.

The TEFAF Rembrandts
As with temporary exhibitions or long-term loans to museums, TEFAF will once again offer its visitors the opportunity to admire (and acquire) masterpieces from private collections from March 11-19.
Since 1996, no fewer than 10 (UPDATE*) paintings by Rembrandt were shown at the Maastricht fair. Contrary to most of the secretive collectors who kept those TEFAF Rembrandts out of sight for many years, the majority of the new owners are sharing their masterpieces with the public:
‘Portrait of a Man’ (with Naumann 1996) is now on loan from Peter & Irene Ludwig at the affiliated museum suermondtludwig in Aachen, `Portrait of Aeltje Uylenburgh` (with Noortman 2001) is a promised gift from De Mol van Otterlo to the mfaboston and the Baders bequeathed `Portrait of Man with Arms Akimbo` (with Naumann 2011) to The Agnes Etherington Art Center (aeartcentre).
#ThomasKaplan, currently the most eager #privatecollector of the Dutch master, acquired 3 TEFAF Rembrandts for his traveling theleidencollection: ‘Portrait of a Man in a Red Doublet’ (with Noortman 2001); ‘Minerva in her Study’ (with Naumann 2002) and ‘Smell’ (with Talabardon & Gautier 2016). `Minerva` is currently on display at his exhibition at the hermitage_amsterdam.
After shown at TEFAF 2006, ‘St James the Greater` (with Salander O`Reilly) was sold through Sotheby’s to an anonymous collector. And in 2020 the same auctioneer sold ‘Self Portrait’ (with Noortman), after not been on public view since TEFAF 2008.
Not for sale, but gemaeldegalerie.skd lent Rembrandt’s ‘The Abduction of Ganymede’ for the TEFAF Museum Exhibtion in 2019.
*UPDATE TEFAF Rembrandt 10: in 2006 ‘Portret of Anna Six-Wymer’ from the Six Collection was on loan at TEFAF (with Noortman).

It is difficult to express the profundity of coincidences or feelings of déjà vu without sounding a bore, yet they constitute a major — if largely unspoken — source of life’s secret richness. Happily we can all refer to Proust on this topic, if not to each other.
As tefaf comes to a close after a spectacular run, however, I can’t help but describe a little coincidence I experienced there last week.
All through the week I had been reading Oscars coverage on planes, trains, and automobiles en route from Manhattan to Maastricht. If she won the Best Actress Academy Award, I read, michelleyeoh_official would be the first Asian winner of Best Actress at the Oscars. Intriguingly, however, she was listed as the second “Asian-identifying” nominee of the award.
While that phrase sparked a culture wars backlash on Twitter, it was used with good reason: the first Best Actress nominee of Asian descent, born in Mumbai, did not identify as Asian. Part British, part Sri Lankan, and part Māori, with a family background as complex and violent as the Empire it was forged within, Merle Oberon claimed to be the daughter of a well-off Tasmanian who died in a hunting accident. As an adult, she passed as White.
When Oberon became a movie star, her Hollywood studio inherited the job of presenting — and preserving — this fiction, spinning it into a durable personal brand. In 1935, when she was nominated for her performance in “The Dark Angel” (1935), the headlines praised a talented ingenue, taking little note of her background.
Throughout the week, I thought of Googling Merle Oberon to learn more about her, but something always distracted me: an avalanche of emails, incoming text messages, an abrupt blizzard in Utrecht. Yet her unusual name continued to circle in my mind. Perhaps I had seen one of her films? I couldn’t quite reminder.
When finally I walked into the vast fair, however, as if on an invisible track, I walked almost directly to this portrait — of Merle Oberon. As I stood before her, with a tingly sense of presence, it was if I had traveled all that way to meet her.
And perhaps I had.

Fall in love at the magnificent creations by annahu_hautejoaillerie at tefaf
Prodigy cellist, Anna’s design inspirations are often rooted in her deep devotion to classical music, though she also draws from her heritage and nature, and occasionally references Impressionism and Art Nouveau. Anna is as much a scholar as she is an artist and her designs reflect that rarity and sophistication. She works exclusively with French-trained artisans, who are masters of old-world craftsmanship and stewards of new-world innovation. Her ateliers in New York and Paris are among the world’s finest.

In Focus: Georg Baselitz, ‘Walla Halla’ (2020) at TEFAF Maastricht
In 1969, Georg Baselitz began to display his works upside down, emphasising the abstract qualities of his compositions while retaining the psychological charge of their figurative subject matter.
In recent years, Georg has made the body’s aging process a focus in his work. He has made numerous studies of his own body and that of his wife Elke and in `Walla Halla` (2020) finds new possibilities to explore the effects of time in the works` dark patinas, which call to mind wrinkled skin.
In honour of the artist`s 85th birthday, two solo exhibitions at the Kunsthistorisches Museum and the Albertina Museum will open in Vienna this Spring.
See the work on White Cube’s stand at TEFAF Maastricht (Stand 400) until 19 March 2023 or 🔗 click the link in our bio to explore the presentation online.

"Where once geometry provided a sign of stability, order, and proportion, today it offers an array of shifting signifiers and images of confinement and deterrence."
—Peter Halley
Peter Halley’s painting "Stranger Danger" features in Gagosian`s booth at TEFAF New York (tefaf), which closes today at Park Avenue Armory.
"Stranger Danger" is organized around the juxtaposition of precise geometric shapes and Day-Glo colors, its rectangular “cells” interconnected through linear “conduits.” The work’s vertical bars signify Halley’s revelation of geometry as confinement while its title points to abstraction as a mode of social critique, invoking the period’s prevailing ethical inconsistencies with a media catchphrase that arguably incited a disproportionate fear of child abduction. A Rare Miniature Mask of Shame, Circa 17th Century
Private Collection-NFS
No Gossiping, Gluttony, Lying, or Eavesdropping!
Beautiful horror! Very masterly and detailed worked out iron hand forged mask. Might have been a ‘sample’ used by a blacksmith travelling to sell his products.
8X10cm
Shame masks were a type of embarrassing punishment device used in Europe during the Middle Ages until 18th century. These European metal masks would shame you into good behavior!
They were usually made of cold, unyielding metal, and the masks were created in various mortifying designs. The main point of the practice was to humiliate the offender as much as possible. Consequently, the masks were often made to look or sound silly and give folks an idea of the individual’s sin. For instance, some had donkey ears to signify a fool. This sample has a long tongue to represent a gossiper. And it has a long nose which could indicate that the wearer was guilty of lying, of being nosy, or of being proud and arrogant.

Laura Owens
Untitled
2022
Flashe on paper, wooden frame upholstered in yarn
91 x 71,2 cm
This work continues Owens’ exploration of artist’s frames, which began with the works she made for the 2021 exhibition Laura Owens & Vincent Van Gogh at Fondation Vincent Van Gogh Arles.
While preparing for her 2022 exhibition in Cologne, Owens began to experiment with several new materials for frames. Again, she planned for almost every work in the exhibition to be framed in a custom-made artist’s frame that would be an integral part of the work. This is one of two works she made for the show that incorporate embroidery into the frame.

Marvelous! Two questionable works that caught my eye at the Wallraf-Richartz Museum, Cologne.
1. Rembrandt? Studio? Gerbrand van den Eeckhout?
5. Kölner Meister.
Curiosity got the best of me.
Again, like in my last post, is this - Nude study as Christ at the Column - a genuine Rembrandt?
Is this touching study by the master himself, is it from his studio, is it made by one of his students, maybe Gerbrand van den Eeckhout?...
The authenticity of this oil study has been long disputed…
The second work is an unusual piece. Made around 1425-35 in Cologne, it’s part painting, part sculpture. As the quality of the sculpted heads exceeds the painted parts, questions arise.
Is this - Christ on the Cross between Mary and John - maybe entirely created by a carver or is it just an uneven collaborative work of art?
What do you make out of it?

The second work is an unusual piece. Made around 1425-35 in Cologne, it’s part painting, part sculpture. As the quality of the sculpted heads exceeds the painted parts, questions arise.
Is this - Christ on the Cross between Mary and John - maybe entirely created by a carver or is it just an uneven collaborative work of art?
What do you make out of it?
