It is difficult to express the profundity of coincidences or feelings of déjà vu without sounding a bore, yet they constitute a major — if largely unspoken — source of life’s secret richness. Happily we can all refer to Proust on this topic, if not to each other.

As tefaf comes to a close after a spectacular run, however, I can’t help but describe a little coincidence I experienced there last week.

All through the week I had been reading Oscars coverage on planes, trains, and automobiles en route from Manhattan to Maastricht. If she won the Best Actress Academy Award, I read, michelleyeoh_official would be the first Asian winner of Best Actress at the Oscars. Intriguingly, however, she was listed as the second “Asian-identifying” nominee of the award.

While that phrase sparked a culture wars backlash on Twitter, it was used with good reason: the first Best Actress nominee of Asian descent, born in Mumbai, did not identify as Asian. Part British, part Sri Lankan, and part Māori, with a family background as complex and violent as the Empire it was forged within, Merle Oberon claimed to be the daughter of a well-off Tasmanian who died in a hunting accident. As an adult, she passed as White.

When Oberon became a movie star, her Hollywood studio inherited the job of presenting — and preserving — this fiction, spinning it into a durable personal brand. In 1935, when she was nominated for her performance in “The Dark Angel” (1935), the headlines praised a talented ingenue, taking little note of her background.

Throughout the week, I thought of Googling Merle Oberon to learn more about her, but something always distracted me: an avalanche of emails, incoming text messages, an abrupt blizzard in Utrecht. Yet her unusual name continued to circle in my mind. Perhaps I had seen one of her films? I couldn’t quite reminder.

When finally I walked into the vast fair, however, as if on an invisible track, I walked almost directly to this portrait — of Merle Oberon. As I stood before her, with a tingly sense of presence, it was if I had traveled all that way to meet her.

And perhaps I had.

A Rare Miniature Mask of Shame, Circa 17th Century

Private Collection-NFS

No Gossiping, Gluttony, Lying, or Eavesdropping!
Beautiful horror! Very masterly and detailed worked out iron hand forged mask. Might have been a ‘sample’ used by a blacksmith travelling to sell his products.

8X10cm

Shame masks were a type of embarrassing punishment device used in Europe during the Middle Ages until 18th century. These European metal masks would shame you into good behavior!
They were usually made of cold, unyielding metal, and the masks were created in various mortifying designs. The main point of the practice was to humiliate the offender as much as possible. Consequently, the masks were often made to look or sound silly and give folks an idea of the individual’s sin. For instance, some had donkey ears to signify a fool. This sample has a long tongue to represent a gossiper. And it has a long nose which could indicate that the wearer was guilty of lying, of being nosy, or of being proud and arrogant.
