Which artwork is the most personally meaningful to you?
This installation called BREAST Friends Forever is the most personally meaningful to me because of the healing process I went through while making it. My mother had passed away from breast cancer and I felt very mad at the disease. The more sculptures I hand crocheted, the more the anger and fear dissipated and helped me heal.
Is there a piece that signifies a breakthrough for you?
"Every Drop Counts" was a breakthrough in that it signified my potential as an installation artist. From there, I began playing with several kinds of spaces, and it opened up the possibilities to bring fiber art into the sculptural realm.
Which artwork makes you the most proud? How does this artwork relate to artwork you admire?
This hand knit luminaire is one of the artworks that makes me most proud because I dive into the design world with all my might and no fear of space, color or size. It was featured in the cover of several publications which led to great exposure.
Which of your artworks reminds you of your youth or where you’re from?
"Free Spirit" 2021 is a series of abstract work that started during the pandemic, where my only purpose was playing and painting with the yarn. I only needed to have fun with the process. And what started with "yarn sketches" ended up with a full blown new series of works with a great potential for abstraction.
How did you use materials to communicate your ideas?
The materials I work with are an integral part of my art practice. I mainly work with hand dyed merino wool that comes from my native country of Uruguay, where there are more sheep than human beings. In Uruguay wool is a common source of income particularly for women from the rural areas who hand dye the wool.
Is there a piece that is conveying a specific message to the viewers?
My whole family has been there at every step, but also the whole staff at Oolite Arts. Also the artist community has helped me tremendously.
Who is your current favorite artist who shows work in Miami?
FAMA-Fiber Artists Miami Association was co-founded by me and 2 other artists in 2020
What was the most memorable museum experience you have had?
It happened at The Society of the Four Arts. Museum and Gardens in Palm Beach, FL. I was called to make and installation of "Tree Huggers" in their Gardens. And another group installation inside the same Museum, for the "Talking Threads" exhibition, 2021.
