The Whitney Museum of American Art has chosen curators Chrissie Iles and Meg Onli to co-curate its 2024 Biennial exhibition. Iles, a long-term curator at the museum, brings experience and a focus on film and video. Onli, formerly from the Underground Museum in Los Angeles, has expertise in contemporary art, Black film, and video histories. The museum’s director, Adam D. Weinberg, highlights their contrasting perspectives and believes their collaboration will result in an engaging and thought-provoking exhibition.

There`s a code of ethics around the way the game is played; rigorous competition, humility, and respect."

Whitney Biennial 2022: Quiet as It`s Kept
The 2022 Whitney Biennial is accompanied by this landmark volume. Each of the Biennial’s participants is represented by a selected exhibition history, a bibliography, and imagery complemented by a personal statement or interview that foregrounds the artist’s own voice. Essays by the curators and other contributors elucidate themes of the exhibition and discuss the participants. The 2022 Biennial’s two curators, David Breslin and Adrienne Edwards, are known for their close collaboration with living artists. Coming after several years of seismic upheaval in and beyond the cultural, social, and political landscapes, this catalogue will offer a new take on the storied institution of the Biennial while continuing to serve—as previous editions have—as an invaluable resource on present-day trends in contemporary art in the United States.

Congratulations to Ellen Gallagher and Rick Lowe on being selected to participate in the Whitney Biennial 2022!
This year’s Biennial features dynamic contributions that take different forms over the course of the exhibition: artworks—even walls—change, and performance animates the galleries and objects. With an intergenerational roster of sixty-three artists and collectives at all points in their careers, many of whom work with an interdisciplinary perspective, the Biennial surveys and presents the art and ideas of our time. Thank you benstoppable and artnet !
This is a truly thoughtful review of the Whitney Biennial. It’s refreshing to see someone summarize clearly without misunderstanding intentions or dancing around the meaning of the work. Thank you for taking the time, it is reflected in the review.

An abstract painting from Rick Lowe`s "Project Row Houses" series is included in the Whitney Biennial, which opened to the public today, April 6, at the Whitney Museum of American Art (whitneymuseum)!
Lowe (rickloweofficial) describes the painting, “Project Row Houses: If Artists Are Creative Why Can’t They Create Solutions,” as a reflective narrative of his contemplation of the question in the title—a challenge to make work that went beyond representation and symbolism. To create the piece, Lowe cut up and collaged his domino pattern drawings to create a kind of language. During this process, he attempted to identify letters in the collage that make up the question in the title.
“It took some time but I found the letters, and they’re embedded in the painting. It is a quiet secret in that it is difficult to find. That is a specific secret but beyond that, I think the bigger secret is embedded in the attempt to answer the question.” Follow the link in our bio to learn more.

We started the semester in ARTE: 450 Art with the Disabled Learner with celestial_investments talk from the 2022 Whitney Biennial: Quiet as It’s Kept. (link in my bio) Emily Barker’s work is incredible. Their work is thoughtful, beautiful, and connected by the heavy gravity thread to Felix Gonzalez-Torres’ work (which made me weep two decades ago when I first saw Perfect Lovers).
Barker’s work “Untitled (Kitchen)” stood out in the show and has continued to remain present in my mind as I navigate the daily built environment. Yesterday, my mom called to tell me she’d been able to take her first unassisted trip out of the house to the neighborhood park since 2019 because she finally received her power wheelchair after months of fighting with her insurance company. This morning, I walked to campus in the rain, across jagged brick sidewalks riddled with tree roots.
As I traversed the wet, precarious mile between my apartment and campus, I realized there was no reason to wait for a later point in the semester to share this video. We can’t make meaningful changes in education, policy, or the lived experience of people with disabilities if we wait for the conversation to be comfortable or convenient. I was so excited about the thoughtful discussion we had afterwards.
As thejellydoughnut pointed out, the audience questions at the end of the video are a little tangential, but Emily Barker repeatedly responded to the questions in a way that answered them while also pointing to their message of disability justice. The answer to many questions is, after all, disability justice.

🌊 In sync with rising sea-levels artists have become increasingly attuned to the sinking feeling of catastrophe.
