DORIS SALCEDO
Uprooted
2020-2022
804 dead trees and steel
650 x 3000 × 500 cm
Commissioned by Sharjah Art Foundation, with the generous support of Glenstone Museum, Potomac, Maryland Courtesy of the artist Known for her sociopolitical sculptural work, Doris Salcedo`s multidisciplinary practice centres around themes of memory, loss and violence as experienced by the exiled and traumatised.
The large-scale mixed media installation,
Uprooted (2020-2022) consists of 804 dead trees that are sculpted and assembled to depict a house. Structurally uninhabitable, the work symbolises the refugee`s predicament--a seemingly
permanent state of impermanence-and draws from the artist`s long term research on forms of violence experienced by migrants, displaced persons and refugees.
Attributing the cause of this forced movement of people to the capitalist destruction of the environment,
Salcedo positions Uprooted as a site of extreme contradiction at once immovable and rootless, violent and passive.

Natasha Ginwala (natasha_ginwala ), artistic director of COLOMBOSCOPE (colomboscope ), Colombo and associate curator at large at Gropius Bau, Berlin has been appointed as curator for the sixteenth edition of the Sharjah Biennial which will be held in February 2025.
Ginwala will curate the Biennial along with Amal Khalaf, Zeynep Öz, Alia Swastika and Megan Tamati-Quennell. According to Sheikha Hoor Al Qasimi, President and Director of the Sharjah Art Foundation, the idea is that the exhibitions will be ‘intentionally expansive and decentralised in its approach’.
In the past, Ginwala has worked as artistic director of the Gwangju Biennale (2021) and has also been part of the curatorial teams for Contour Biennale 8 (2017), documenta 14 (2017), 8th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art (2014) and 8th Taipei Biennial (2012).

Yinka Shonibare’s ‘Decolonised Structures’ have been unveiled!
Commissioned by sharjahart for Sharjah Biennial 15: Thinking Historically in the Present.
‘This new series recreates seven public statues of British imperialists that currently shape the cityscape and very fabric of London.
The figures are stripped of the authority of bronze and marble and instead shrouded in the colonial legacy of Dutch wax patterns. Yinka Shonibare CBE thus reveals the ties between places and powers through this fabric design, which originated in Indonesia, mass-produced by the Dutch and sold to Britain’s West African colonies.
By decontextualising these monuments, Shonibare highlights the political realities that gave rise to them and demonstrates how their presence in public spaces evokes pressing discussions around Britain’s relationship with its past and the institutional racism it conceived.
SB15 was conceived by the late Okwui Enwezor and curated by Hoor Al Qasimi. Themes surrounding postcolonial subjectivity, the body as a repository of memories, processes of creolisation, hybridisation and the restitution of objects are explored throughout the Biennial. Shonibare’s works are on view at the Old Al Diwan Al Amiri.’

Whilst the disaster in Turkiye and Syria continues to unfold the poignancy of life continuing as normal did not pass me by.
I spent a beautiful few days in Sharjah at the Biennale with my beautiful bashibozuk and wejdanhmr 💕
This edition of sharjahart as usual was fascinating, the devolved format across multiple venues and the focus on artists whose work explored post-nationalist identities through liminal places and forgotten histories. Artists and works explored cultural traditions, values, systems and histories holistically, as part of a global whole. It felt to me like a hopeful and positive projection of what social connection and the shape of an individual could be in the future 💕
The biennale showed the work of many artists from the global south and in diaspora whose use of textiles and materials associated with “indigenous” aesthetics was notable. We really enjoyed this installation of embroidery, crochet and medicinal plants by annalee.devere and yoeriguepin
Thank you hooralq and to the late Okwui Enwezor for such an illuminating perspective.

Reposted from hankwillisthomas I`m proud to be presenting work in Sharjah Biennial 15 conceived by the late Okwui Enwezor & curated by hooralq "Thinking Historically in the Present," alongside so many amazing artists.
Our world is more interconnected than it ever has been, yet the legacies of colonialism are still deeply rooted in our present. George Orwell once wrote, "Who controls the past controls the future: who controls the present controls the past." It is likely that European Modernism is primarily an extension of African thought. Art history, like all history, is subjective. It services the storyteller. In fact, no history is singular or complete. The effects of political, cultural, and technological developments spread and influence the lives of other nations. My hope is that weaving these histories together will help us to consider the ramifications of colonialism and the origins of present day challenges by illuminating the cause and effect of past events, cultural exchanges, and power dynamics.
