Housed at volkerhaug’s converted 1940s warehouse in East Brunswick, and held in conjunction with #MelbourneDesignWeek2021, After Hours was an exhibition of side projects by local creatives—the work they do when they’re not at work.
Following a year many spent at home blurring the lines between on and off the clock, After Hours captured the approachable and personable spirit of interdisciplinary design in Melbourne, celebrating artistic pursuits often pushed aside by daily business. See more via the 🔗 in bio. 💛

Buhrich House II / Eva & Hugh Buhrich House (1968-72) Castlecrag.
As part of #melbournedesignweek, stephen.varady, johngollings & durbachblockjaggers have reprised John & Neil’s exhibition from 1991 which is on until the 23rd of March. So here’s a redux of this utterly brilliant house, surely one of the greatest masterpieces of 20th Century architecture, to encourage everyone to head to brickworksbp at 367 Collins St Melbourne to catch this show. The house is actually an extension, built out from the remnants of one of the Griffins’ original Castlecrag houses. The Buhrichs were both students of Hans Poelzig in Berlin, but became refugees fleeing the Nazis; first to Gdańsk, then the Netherlands, before finally choosing Australia over either the US or South Africa. Despite having such excellent pedigrees they had a hard time gaining professional registration in their new country and weren’t registered as architects until 1971. Despite this they completed about 32 buildings, (most now demolished 🙄), and contributed extensively to the development of Sydney modernism. I first visited in 1988 with a group of RMIT landscape architecture students and we spent a lovely afternoon with Mr Buhrich. The interactions of curved, angled & rectilinear spaces really remind me of Paul Klee’s language of drawing established in his ‘Pedagogical Sketchbook’, and the highlight is the ceiling with the floating concrete panel surrounded by glass holding Eva Buhrich’s wonderful tapestry and half the kitchen joinery. These shots are a mix of images by John Gollings, stephen.varady and from my visit 30 years later.
📷 johngollings (1991 & during construction with which John helped!) stephen.varady, me & measured drawings by durbachblockjaggers scanned and processed by John for this exhibition.

Delighted to be one of the ten designers included for the Australian Design Centre’s presentation at Melbourne Design Fair, Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre from Thursday 18 to Sunday 21 May 2023. Looking forward to visiting tomorrow and seeing the latest in contemporary design at the fair and on exhibition.
Selected for the fair are two pieces from my ‘Waste’ series - repurposing waste and excess materials; these two ‘Waste’ pieces were handwoven with cotton threads and nylon monofilament, all sourced from my studio and reimagined into these container shapes by folding and stitching the woven material.

This week, The Nature of an Island opens at jamesmakingallery for ngvmelbourne #melbournedesignweek. The exhibition is the first formal colab between dale.hardiman and myself. The Nature Of An Island is a series of objects that imagine a future of chaos led by individuality. During the making, neither of us were allowed to communicate, a process I encourage none of you to attempt tbh. I’m very excited to have this work in the world and I would love for you to join us this Saturday at 3-6pm for the opening 🍷if you can’t make it that’s fine, just message me so I know who to block and report. Otherwise the exhibition can be viewed 26-5 April and you can enquire with the lovely team at James Makin❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

ngvmelbourne`s #MelbourneDesignWeek2023 offered a glimpse into local and international design makers with one-of-a-kind, limited edition and small-batch design production of furniture, lighting and objects presented at the Melbourne Design Fair and across the city in smaller exhibitions. MDW continues to utilise its platform to advocate the value of good design and foster a place for participants to promote and sell their work.
In a nod to the past, the week also offered a riveting journey through design history with a plethora of exhibitions paying homage to rich design legacies. See our in-depth review of the highlights at the 🔗 in bio ❤️

On display until Friday March 25th 💜

Meteorite by daniellebrustman and edwardlinacre is a modular and sculptural light made from stackable and modular components. The elements are constructed from powder coated, spun aluminium, tubular steel and acrylic sheet. The sculptural form is inspired by the trajectory of a meteorite’s fall from outer space and the transformation into cone-like shapes as it passes through Earth’s atmospheric layers and eventually collides with the Earth’s surface.
The varying angles of the cone-shaped meteorites dictate the direction and flight path in which the cones travel. This piece offers a metaphor to consider our position on the planet and to provoke ideas pointing towards adaptive ways of living and being.
Exhibition photography by tobiastitzphotography.
The exhibition is open in the Stylecraft Melbourne showroom, 145 Flinders Lane, until Friday March 25, 2022.

On the occasion of the Melbourne Design Week, Tom Fereday and Charlie White present ‘Versa’, an exhibition showcasing a collection of unique furniture and architecture elements.
Versa (‘turned’ or ‘changed’ in Latin) is a collaborative series of installations using end-of-life materials.
The exhibition is tailored to the three spaces of the Meat Market Stables.
Developed through a process of independent collaboration, Fereday and White have sought to create a series of works that explore the turning of end-of-life materials and the challenging of their perceived value.
With a self-imposed constraint to make only one design gesture each per room, works have been conceived as the transformation of a material into an interior element – seat, table, light, ceiling, wall & floor – and then designed to express a sensory quality – dark, light, soft, warm, sharp and hard.

Last night we got to unveil ‘Meteorite’ at stylecraftfurniture as 1 of 5 finalists in the 2022 afdaward prize. The Meteorite light is a collaboration between myself and lighting designer / industrial designer and all out legend edwardlinacre. Ed has worked fiercely and brilliantly to engineer, make and help me produce this 4.2m high lighting sculpture over the last 4 months. I’ll be posting a lot more about Meteorite in the coming days but for now I would just like to give a very big congratulations to Ashley Eriksmoen the_ashsmoen who took out the prize for her magnificent work and a huge shout out to the other incredible finalists elliotbastianon trentjansenstudio chrisconnelldesign. It’s a real honour to share this platform with you all. A massive thank you to the esteemed judges, ngvmelbourne and stylecraftfurniture for including and supporting this work. The finalists’ works are all on display in the beautiful stylecraftfurniture showroom for Melbourne Design Week. I really hope you can all get down to see it.
