A beautiful abstract painting by furniture designer and artist; Joaquim Tenreiro. Made in his own atelier in Rio de Janeiro in 1972. Tenreiro was mainly known as a furniture designer, what many people don’t know is that he was also a very talented artist. He already painted since the 1950s. At a later stage of his carer he made more art and even combined his furniture making knowledge with his art, making beautiful graphic wooden artworks. This painting from 1972 was made shortly after he was active as a furniture designer, focussing more on his art. A beautiful example of abstract shapes and finding new colours, makes this painting a very attractive piece. The colours a very unusual and remind a bit of some works by Jean Arp. The painting is in fully original condition as how this was found, could be cleaned upon request by a professional. The frame is original too and the painting was signed in the right lower corner and at the back; TENREIRO 72. A truly rare and beautiful original piece of art by Tenreiro which is very hard to come by if you compare it with a piece of furniture he designed. A true collector’s piece, and an amazing one we might add.

The final countdown. This journey started in my Indian Himalayan studio last year and is ending here in London. The final week of weaving saw me teetering on my three-legged stool balanced high on the scaffolding platform; stretching to weave the finishing plain sections and knotting. Now as you see all three tapestries cut from the frame with the help of Lottie, Olly and Nico from sarahmyerscoughgallery ,thank you. Lying on the floor, face down begins the process of weaving in the last of the reverse loose ends and finishing the warp. I’ll fix the top of the tapestries to ply boards for hanging and blackened steel rods to the base for weight. Stitch my initials and the year. Then flip the tapestries and the final work of binding the fringing and iron wire which will connect the three tapestries will begin. Ready for sarahmyerscoughgallery and padesignart.
Thank you to Lottie Hughes for documenting cutting down the tapestries with videos and images and ziggyherz for the final image of me finishing the warp. Plasters on every finger.

Here in London as I’m completing the triptych of tapestries that I’ve been weaving since March my mind wanders to last year as I wove “Not Me” in my Himalayan studio. “Not Me”can be seen now sarahmyerscoughgallery in North Row, Mayfair as part of their silver jubilee exhibition “Collections”and looks incredible amongst Sarah’s selection of her extraordinary artists works. I’ve now completed the weaving of my new tapestries and they stand like organic giants, still warped to the frames, towering over my studio and me. Whether in India or London weaving tapestries immerse me in the process of making; from trekking for mountain wool, to sourcing Ganga driftwood for the fire and collecting leaves,roots and flowers for dyeing the fibres, to navigating the traditional processes of preparing and finishing the yarns. No machines are involved and no chemicals. When I was asked in 2017 if I would set up a textile initiative in the Himalayan mountains it was on the premise that the footprint I left would be environmentally pure and ethical and this I have been happy to abide by. In just a few months now I will return to India. As always my timing is guided by nature who will not be hurried. As autumn and winter descends over the mountains all work moves from outside to inside. Temperatures fall to below freezing and the heat of the sun which enables my practice is in short supply.
