Details
Manifesta 2024, the 15th edition of the European Nomadic Biennial, will be held in the metropolitan region of Barcelona, Spain. The City of Barcelona invited Manifesta with the aim of decentralizing cultural infrastructures and creating a framework for artistic interventions across the region. Manifesta changes its location every two years and invites interdisciplinary practitioners to reflect on emerging developments in Europe. Manifesta 15, scheduled to open on September 8, 2024, will explore the urban fabric of the metropolitan region, focusing on socio-cultural themes and geographical locations. The pre-biennial process involves researching and collaborating on socio-cultural and ecological projects in the region through a participatory approach. The outcome of this research will lead to the development of innovative artistic projects addressing urgent socio-ecological transformations. Sergio Pardo, a Spanish architect based in New York, has been appointed as the Creative Mediator to work on this process. The three selected geographical nodes for Manifesta 15 are the Besòs river, the Llobregat delta, and the Collserola mountain range, representing natural systems and open spaces in close relation to urban and industrial development. These nodes will explore themes of imagining the future, managing imbalances in the commons, and caring for ourselves and others. Manifesta 15 will involve co-creation and will also incorporate educational research on the pedagogical histories of Catalonia. The results of these processes will be showcased at Manifesta 15 Barcelona’s headquarters in late summer 2023 and will inform the vision for the biennial, which will run from September 8 to November 24, 2024.

Finally I`ve visited the Grand Hotel which is one of the central venues of manifestabiennial . The Manifesta allows both international and local Albanian artists to show their art since Albanians from Kosovë are limited in visiting international art exhibitions or showing their art to an international public due to visa restrictions which don`t allow them to travel freely - the last European state with those restrictions.
I was not only interested in seeing those (incredible) art installations which deal with topics such as migration, social and/or environmental issues but also to see the Grand Hotel from the inside. The Grand Hotel, simply called "Grândi" by the locals, is located in the middle of Prishtina, the capital of Kosovë and was built in the 1970s. Its glory days were before the war and it was the place-to-be for international politicians, journalists and partys. Today, unfortunately, it is privatised and has gotten abandoned. Nevertheless it was fascinating to walk through this old building I`ve passed by many times from the outside. Not only because its halls were full of life again but especially because of the reason that it stands for a time in which my parents lived in Prishtina in the late 80s/early 90s and witnessed its glory days before their migration - one of the topics of Manifesta.

‘Europe Without Monuments’, 2022 by artist Stanislava Pinchuk (stanislava__pinchuk) was a playground and pavilion; an artwork placed in the middle of the Ibër River, by the New Bridge in Mitrovica, Kosovo – a deeply divided city.
Commissioned by Manifesta 14 Biennial (manifestabiennial), its three forms were taken at scale from Mitrovica`s iconic concrete `Monument to Fallen Miners` built by architect Bogdan Bogdanović commemorating the unified revolt of workers from the Trepça mines against Nazi occupation of the city.
Built from scaffolding—at a 1:1 scale—in steel and zinc (a material still mined in Mitrovica), Pinchuk`s work re-imagines the city`s riverscape as a fluid and ambiguous boundary, rather than a strict geopolitical divide.
Bogdanović loved the idea of children playing around his monuments and wished he could build structures to love, joy, jokes and laughter.
‘Europe Without Monuments’ was a gift to all people of Mitrovica.
Documentation of the project will be on view until Saturday 3 June 2pm at the Northern Centre for Contemporary Art.

Future, 2022
20 porcelain coffee cups, Turkish coffee
.
#0GMS ivanmoudov

Center for Narrative Practice
Prishtina, Kosovo
.
The 0GMS cabinet has been through a long journey from the kitchen of an independent art institution in Sofia to an artist work encapsulating other artists works in traveling exhibitions that can infiltrate any space, any institution. Part metal safe for precious objects, part magic box filled with miniature wonders, the very object of 0GMS has appealed to Maria Nalbantova not only with its aura of a treasure chest but also with its neglected mundane functionality. With “Future” the artist returns to the cabinet’s origins as a kitchen cupboard and to its social aspect of gathering (objects, artworks, artists, publics, conversations), in order to look into the future.
Maria Nalbantova fills her designated drawer with 20 identical stained coffee cups, not unlike filling a dishwasher. The cups were used to serve Turkish coffee, prepared for the public by the artist herself, on a small portable hotplate during the opening. Before being stored in the drawer, the used coffee cups have been turned upside down and thus prepared in the typical manner for Turkish coffee fortune telling. The ritual of coffee fortune telling is widely practiced in the Balkans still today. It is an easy and accessible tool for divination just as much as it is a social ritual. The leftover coffee sediment spreads on the inside of the cup, forming patterns, which could be read as sings of the future. The 20 cups, stained with leftovers of the finely ground coffee, resemble lunar landscapes of individual futures. However, once placed in the 0GMS drawer, the authorship of these futures is lost. Just like the cabinet exhibition, the cups become a collective artwork and the futures they contain – a collective potentiality waiting to be deciphered.

Alketa Xhafa Mripa alketaxh.m is a Kosovar conceptual artist, activist and author born in Kosovo, 1980. Her work deals with a wide range of topic areas, including issues to do with human rights, identity, memory, gender, and migration. Her pieces are able to translate hard hitting themes often through a variety of mediums including, installations, paintings and video.
Xhafa Mripa’s work is related to her personal experiences, but also extends beyond herself. She is able to tap into collectivised experiences and bring forward needed conversations. She arrived in London in 1997 and attended Central Saint Martins, where she attained a degree in Fine Art.
Her career as an artist has been extensive, and her pieces have been exhibited in spaces around the world. One of her most well known pieces, “Thinking of You”, 2015 was exhibited in the Prishtina city stadium. This piece focused on representing experiences of women who were raped during the Kosovo war. After the end of the war, there was a layer of shame and judgement that embedded itself within Kosovar society. Often making it very difficult for women to express their experiences of rape and sexual assault during the war, the number of which is to estimated at 20,000+.
Xhafa Mripa’s piece very clearly aimed to spark needed conversations around this issue, by very poignantly displaying thousands of skirts and dresses in a football stadium. This to clearly address the issues women who have experienced rape and assault have to endure in a patriarchal and male dominated society. That often seeks to shame women for the violence inflicted upon them.
This year, Xhafa Mripa will be bringing her art back to her native Kosovo once more. She will be exhibiting at this year`s Manifesta 14, held in Prishtina, Kosovo (22th of July - 30th of October 2022) manifestabiennial
You do not want to miss the chance to see Xhafa Mripa’s work first hand and the power it exudes.

Annie Sprinkle and Beth Stephens | Dirt Bed
Manifesta 14 | Prishtina | Kosova
They say: close the borders.
We say: Cuddle
They say: build a wall.
We say: cuddle.
They say: fear the foreigner, watch the stranger. They say: praise the individual, compete, win.
We say: cuddle.
Paul B. Preciado for Manifesta14

Ecosexual artist couple Beth Stephens and Annie Sprinkle (1960, 1954, US) build community by creating multidisciplinary art projects that envision the natural world, and sexuality, with fresh eyes. They question and expand prevailing notions of environmental art; challenge the mainstream’s binary concepts of gender, erotic pleasure and race; incorporate inclusive, diverse, and imaginative possibilities for more meaningful and happy living; and support scientifically informed environmental practices. Their body of work promotes love, tolerance, sustainability and peace.
As movers and shakers in the ecosexual movement, Sprinkle and Stephens have written instructions for pleasuring the Earth (25 Ways to Make Love to the Earth), ecosexual manifestos and vows for marrying the Earth. Their most recent book, Assuming the Ecosexual Position: The Earth as Lover (2021), was published by University of Minnesota Press.

The last two Saturdays have been an absolute treat for seeing contemporary international art in Darwin. ncca_darwin
First up, it was an incredible inspiration to attend the Curator Talk by Petrit Abazi, Director NCCA, documenting the exhibition, “Unbordering Worlds : New Narratives for Northern Kosovo”, with work by Piers Greville and Stanislava Pinchuk. The work was presented in Europe in 2022, at Manifesta 14 Prishtina.
Then last Saturday, another fantastic experience to hear the artist, James Drinkwater, and curator, Ken McGregor, talk about James’s paintings in
P A S S A G E currently on exhibition at NCCA.
Extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to see both of these excellently presented exhibitions. Congratulations to the artists and the staff at NCCA.

Artist Angel Vergara is participating in Manifesta 13 Marseille, with a series of live performances by his alter-ego straatman____ .
- - -
Local visitors have the chance to experience the artist in action in the public space (Canebière pedestrian) on October 2-3-7-9 and 10 from 2 to 5 p.m.
- - -
For many years, straatman____ has performed in public while hidden beneath a white sheet, a concept that both attracts and keeps the viewer at a distance. The artist — performing and creating in anonymity — places himself in the centre, but remains protected. Not being able to see well what is going on outside of his shelter, Straatman is inspired by his muted senses and imagination. He sketches on canvas whatever he can hear or observe around him, which is a way to give the audience a spontaneous participatory part in the creation process. By turning into Straatman, Vergara appears like a living sculpture. The painter is literally within the white canvas, which he uses as a movable studio that he can carry around wherever he wants to go. Straatman is a character, a tool, and a work of art. The sketches later serve as a basis for a more elaborate and finished work.
