It is particularly important to focus on the unique characteristics of hand made products in the current era of globalisation, digitalisation and robotics. Craftmanship is satisfying work, makers are in control of what they produce and are able to express their individuality.
Baba Tree works with a community of 500 artisans in Ghana. The production of unique baskets made of elephant grass contributes to the preservation of basket weaving in the Gurunsi community.

Spotted at Elle Decoration’s ‘Fluid Forces’ presentation during Dutch Design Week 2019. “Are you picking up on that pleasant 80s vibe from pendant lamp Rani? We love it! This beauty was created in collaboration with young designer Jasmijn Muskens, whom we invited for our scholarship programme. Jasmijn likes to draw inspiration from the Memphis style, which also emerges in Rani. Rani comes in a pink version which hides the light source when not in use, and in a tinted glass version which gives the light source an aesthetic function.” www.zuiver.com

Basket weaving is a 3D-construction technique allowing the maker to create a three dimensional shape using their own hands and just a few tools. The craft, and also its importance, have undergone changes through time. Few people realise that all woven baskets, furniture and accessories are still made by hand, including those sold by the well-known retail chains. Lack of appreciation for this time consuming technique has resulted in it now rarely being practiced in the western world.

Learning With is a series of talks curated by Formafantasma investigating design as a collaborative research tool.
The conference will investigate design’s possibilities and problematics when addressing crucial contemporary questions related to ecological and social development. The day will alternate trans-disciplinary conversations, lectures and video projections.

Raku!
Raku is a Japanese low fire process that dates back as far as the 16th century. Pots are taken from the kiln while they are still red hot to be placed in a container on fire. Kiki van Eijk exhibits her latest pieces in ceramic exploring the historic technique and finding a way, by trial and error, to develop her signature style. Firing Raku in her studio garden gives her a deep understand of the possibilities of the ancient technique. Working closely to fire ( 1000 degrees Celsius) is a physical act with so many variables within the process that each outcome is almost a surprise, and no object will ever look the same. Keeping alive an intuitive approach to the making, Kiki cultivates the richness of the sensory experience.
Raku Knits
Kiki’s extensive research on the ancient firing Raku technique translates into a collection of knitted wall textiles bridging east, west, low and high tech. Teaming up with Borre Akkersdijk iamtextile , co-founder of Dutch textile innovation studio and clothing label byborre , she produces wall tapestry inspired by the shapes, structures and colors of her Raku fired ceramic collection.

Bij Driving Dutch Design selecteren we jaarlijks twintig tot vijfentwintig studio`s voor een intensief programma, waarin je kennis en vaardigheden ontwikkelt en bouwt aan een waardevol netwerk binnen de design community. Ook begeleiden we deelnemers bij het ontwikkelen van een individuele en effectieve presentatie tijdens Dutch Design Week. Dit alles terwijl je leert van toonaangevende experts in het vakgebied tijdens masterclasses en mentorgesprekken.
De deadline voor aanmelden is 26 november. En voor de snelle beslissers: iedereen die zich vóór 1 oktober aanmeldt, ontvangt een exclusieve uitnodiging voor de Driving Dutch Design borrel tijdens DDW.
