Founded in 1955 and taking place every five years in the German city of Kassel, #documenta tends to exhibit more academic, less commercial works than those seen in #VeniceBiennale. The 2022 edition is curated by the Indonesian collective #ruangrupa, marking the first time the event is organized by a person or group from Asia. For this year’s event, the collective has introduced the Indonesian concept of 𝘭𝘶𝘮𝘣𝘶𝘯𝘨—directly translatable as “rice barn,” a collective accumulation system where crops are stored as a shared common resource—suggesting the motive of healing today’s wounds in solidarity as one community, especially the ones rooted in colonialism, capitalism, and patriarchy.
The road to this year’s documenta has not been smooth; in January, the organizers of the event were accused of connections to the anti-Semitic movement BDS. Opening under a cloud of controversy, documenta 15 will display works by more than 1500 participating artists and collectives of various backgrounds across the city, with more than one million visitors expected over the following 100 days.

シンガポールのグラフィック雑誌「Werk」。本号は、2022年の「ドクメンタ」での展示の一環として制作されました。オフセット印刷の伝統を再定義するもので、自発性と破壊によって形作られています。この限定版では、一冊一冊が異なる色調を持ち、唯一無二の存在となっています。「機械や人間の介入を妨害することで、既存の考え方、技術、手順を機能不全にする」というマニフェストを掲げ、印刷のプロセスを分解して結果を高める手法で、それを本の形で実現しました。直感と偶然を受け入れ、通常は廃棄されるテストシートを製本に使用し、印刷機の水を止めて予測不可能なカラーパターンを作り、CMYKの標準色を蛍光色のバリエーションと交換しました。その結果、まったく新しい本の形が誕生しました。

Shaped by spontaneity and subversion, STEIDL–WERK No.30: KUNSTHAUS GÖTTINGEN redefines the traditions of offset printing. Each book in this limited edition boasts a different range of colors and is thus unique. The publication is a collaboration between Theseus Chan, Gerhard Steidl and the art space Kunsthaus Göttingen, where Chan showed WERK No.30 in “printing futures” as part of documenta 15. The installation, which he added to daily, was Chan’s love letter to printed matter in all its forms (from paper sheets and printing plates to recycled packaging), and the book is both the documentation and final piece of this work. Chan and Steidl took up the manifest of WERK No.30—“to malfunction established mindsets, techniques, and procedures by sabotaging machines and human interventions”—and realized it in book form through what they call “reverse engineering,” deconstructing the processes of printing in order to enhance the results. Embracing intuition and chance, they retained normally discarded test sheets for binding, shut off water on press to create unpredictable color patterns, and exchanged standard CMYK colors for fluorescent variants. The outcome champions “printed anarchy” and is no less than a wholly new form of book.

In der Antisemitismus-Debatte um die Kunstausstellung „documenta fifteen“ steht nun ein großformatiges Banner des Künstlerkollektivs Taring Padi auf dem Kasseler Friedrichsplatz in der Kritik. Es zeigt an einer Stelle einen Mann mit einer Art Hut mit SS-Runen. Er hat Schläfenlocken, blutunterlaufene Augen, spitze Zähne und eine gespaltene Zunge. Ein anderes Motiv bildet einen Soldaten mit Schweinsgesicht ab, er trägt ein Halstuch mit einem Davidstern und einen Helm mit der Aufschrift „Mossad“ – die Bezeichnung des israelischen Auslandsgeheimdiensts.
„Das ist aus meiner Sicht antisemitische Bildsprache“, sagte unter anderem die Kulturstaatsministerin der Bundesregierung, Claudia Roth (Grüne), und forderte am Montag von der documenta-Leitung „die notwendigen Konsequenzen“. Am Abend wurde das Banner schließlich nach weiterem massiven Protest komplett mit schwarzem Stoff verhüllt – ganz zum Unverständnis der Künstler:innen.
Das Werk stehe „in keiner Weise mit Antisemitismus in Verbindung“, wehrte sich Taring Padi in einer Stellungnahme. Die Figuren und Karikaturen auf dem erstmals 2002 ausgestellten Banner seien „kulturspezifisch auf unsere Erfahrungen“ während der Militärdiktatur in Indonesien bezogen. „Wir sind traurig darüber, dass Details dieses Banners anders verstanden werden als ihr ursprünglicher Zweck“, hieß es in der Mitteilung weiter. Den Grund für die entstandene Empörung sehen die Künstler:innen vor allem in der deutschen Vergangenheit.

360度見渡す限り何もない大海原に、何十という大きなタンカーが座礁し捨てられていた。そんな現実とは思えない不思議な風景の中で「タンカーたちは、嵐や台風の影響でその場所を離れ、世界中の海を彷徨っている。渡り鳥は休むためにとまり、彼らが連れてきた生き物や植物が根を下ろし、やがて船全てを覆うほどの森となる。世界中の植物や生き物達がそのタンカーの上で育ち続け、一つの大きな生態系を作りタンカーの世界を作り上げる。」という栗林の妄想から始まったタンカー・プロジェクト。
インターネット上の仮想の海から始動し、実現に向けて活動する過程の一つ一つを現実世界の展覧会やプロジェクトに仕立てながら、地球のあらゆるエネルギーを載せ世界を自由に航海する本物のタンカー島の就航を目指しています。

TEMPLE OF ALTERNATIVE HISTORIES tonight staatstheaterkassel is this season´s final project conceived to run during the time of the Documenta. Intended to open the theatre to a wider and broader audience, this exuberant, 4 hour lasting evening is conceived as a processual work of art of all disciplines and is at its core a collaboration of the most diverse disciplines. For this special project I conceived a spacial approach by using existing materials of the theatre that I combined with newly produced elements on stage to a new, coherent scenography. This reflects the very idea of the project and its approach of conceivable future paths of narration. In the beginning of the reherarsals there was the musical score, and most of the final evening was conceived during the process, what brought the necessity for the scenography to be ultimately flexible. We questioned which spaces and forms of mediation could enhance a public, artistic, and also scientific debate? Can mythological narratives make an impact in this discussion? We were able to create an incredible abundance of images that filled the whole stage by combining the existent and new elements, thus also contributing to the idea of sustainability in the process of theatre making. Many thanks to the other scenographers who have been contributing to this process with parts of their work!

BOLOHO will transform Hanart`s gallery space into a living room and Hong Kong-style cafe (cha chaan teng 茶餐廳), with an environment built from collectively produced paintings, texts, sewing, installation, and even a series of mini-sitcoms.
In its bright and cleverly managed chaos, BOLOHOPE reflects the cultural imagination of this generation of Guangzhou youth, which is interwoven with the memory of Hong Kong media and urban culture of the 2000s---the result of an early open policy between China and Hong Kong which privileged Guangdong before the opening of the rest of China.

haleymellin haley mellin is the max beckmann distinguished visitor jointly of the neuenationalgalerie nationalgalerie and the american academy in 2023.
mellin’s practice is twofold: while an accomplished painter she also works in environmental practice, transforming inches of paintings into acres of conserved wilderness and forests, advising galleries and museums in how to calculate emissions, and become more sustainable and hosting conversations and workshops to give the art community a lower carbon footprint.
she co-founded with me in 2020 the MOCA environmental council, the inaugural environmental council for a museum in the united states.
while on her residency in berlin, mellin hosted a workshop at neue nationalgalerie with dirk messner, president of the german environment agency, artists like tino sehgal, katharina grosse, olafur eliasson, simon denny and colleagues. she learned from the staff of neue nationalgalerie about our daily practice and is now co-hosting a constituting launch for the new GCC Berlin non-profit.

Fourteen Parrots and one Frog, 2022, hand embroidery on canvas, 425 × 470 mm
•
My inspiration for this work was the popular animation "38 Parrots", the symbolism of Oriental wisdom and Russian fairy tales, as well as the art of Andy Warhol. I was interested in breaking the repetition, the principle of pop art. In this work a travelling frog accompanies parrots on a journey to a warm country. Parrots are a symbol of intelligence and a long happy life, and 14 is my favourite number. May this combination bring health and joy, and a long-awaited peace to all of us!

Titled Hold the Door, this talk aims to make space to collectively imagine Caribbean representation in mega exhibitions.
We have invited a group of distinguished artists and curators to talk about their recent participation in the 2022 Biennale de Venezia and documenta 15. Both events, which take place in Europe and have long histories of shaping international discourses on contemporary art, attempted in 2022 to rethink and reconfigure ‘traditional’ templates of exhibition making. The participating speakers will share their experiences of the Venice Biennale and documenta, and reflect on strategies or possibilities for Caribbean participation in these arenas.

I am happy to share today that I am one of documentafifteen lumbung artists!
Humbled and still at times incredulous to be working amongst so many talented, generous, funny and thorough creators and to be a part of this attempt at doing and thinking art (exhibitions) differently.
I’ve been taking my time to think and discuss about ways to use this space for myself and the ecosystems I live and make work in. Several different projects with amazing collaborators are in the making, I/we will share more as soon as things take more palpable shape 🕸

Humbled and still at times incredulous to be working amongst so many talented, generous, funny and thorough creators and to be a part of this attempt at doing and thinking art (exhibitions) differently.

As one of the world’s most famous art exhibitions, since its first edition in 1955, the Kassel documenta has created its institutional brand by reshaping its visu�al identity for each edition. Even in 2017, the curator of the Kassel documenta 14 did not give any design guidance and instead invited four groups of graphic designers to independently create the visual identity for that edition without communicating with each other. Rather than making the Kassel documenta brand difficult to recog�nize, it left a deep impression on the public. In 1989, the members of Group Material—Doug Ashford, Julie Ault, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, and Karen Ramspacher—were invited by the MATRIX Gallery at the Berkeley University Art Museum to deal with the subject of AIDS. The artists assembled their research into an overview, structured by year, of the circumstances under which the epidemic had turned into a national crisis. Among the objects of investigation were events in the fields of medicine, politics, and statistics, representations of AIDS in the media, and artistic responses. The AIDS Timeline, which is reprinted in this notebook, supplies background information on the widespread stigmatization of people with AIDS, documents the impact that homophobia and racism had on the formation of public policy, and places these structures in a larger sociopolitical context.
