Honored to have been in conversation with THE legendary Richard Mayhew! At the age of 97 he’s still got it! 🐐💪🏾🖌. if you didn’t know, during the tumultuous period of social and cultural transformation of the 1960s, Mayhew worked as an artist and an activist most notably as a founding member of Spiral, the legendary group of Black artists including Romare Bearden, Norman Lewis, and Hale Woodruff, organized in 1963 to address issues of civil rights and racial equality through their art. #richardmayhew #thearmoryshow acagalleries thearmoryshow

The Armory Show day three! Stop by booth 210 to view Jeffrey Gibson's "THEY PLAY ENDLESSLY". jeffrune’s latest body of paneled wall works represents a powerful and transformative moment in the evolution of his aesthetic position. Materially and conceptually, they are the culmination of more than two decades of rigorous experimentation.Gibson's interest in the legacy and heritage of Modernism shines through in multiple ways, particularly in his use of the grid as an overriding aesthetic structure. Each section of the grid itself represents an additional layer of material and conceptual deconstruction. Text is incorporated in multiple sections of the grid. A careful reading of the text points the viewer towards references echoing Gibson's longstanding interest in poetry, literature, punk, rave, and club culture. Meanwhile, each letter of the texts is itself pared down into an abstracted, formal composition. As the history of geometric abstraction is referenced throughout these compositions in ways that dynamically intersect with the aesthetic heritage of indigenous art, appropriated images of Native Americans interrogate the cultural tropes viewers typically associate with indigenous art. The figurative Native representations raise critical questions about a culture that embraces what Gibson does, while simultaneously pressuring him and other indigenous artists to continue performing to outdated, colonial expectations and stereotypes.View this work in person now through Sunday thearmoryshow. We are thrilled to present our next solo exhibition with Gibson this November at our Elizabeth St. Gallery.Pictured: Jeffrey Gibson, "THEY PLAY ENDLESSLY", 2021, Canvas, Acrylic Paint, Vintage Beaded Wallet, Vintage Wooden Broach, Archival Pigment Print on Rice Paper, Glass Beads, Artificial Sinew, Hematite Beads, Plastic Beads, Druzy Beads, Metal Sequins, Turquoise Beads, Nylon Thread, 66.5 x 50.5 in#JeffreyGibson #KaviGupta #TheArmoryShow

So much of thearmoryshow is about the people. The people you know, those you reconnect with, and those you meet. I saw Ana Patricia Gomez’s tote from afar. I love a good tote bag, and now have a new friend in Colombia! Ana Patricia is the director of La Balsa Arte in Colombia.

Armory Off Site

Armory’s outdoor art programing brings thought provoking large art installations to New York City parks + public spaces. These installations are generally presented during the Armory Art Fair and often remain after the closing of the show.

Juan Capistran “Sundown”

Armory Off Site / Juan Capistran Do you know the meaning Juan Capistran “Sundown” in Bella in Abzug Park NYC. The “Get Out” text based art work glows with warm inviting and optimistic colors however there is a more thought provoking meaning and conversation to be had about these pieces.

Rooted in the context of “sundown towns” or “sunset towns” means all white municipalities /town practicing racial segregation by exclusion. Originating based on signs that dictated that “colored people” must leave town by sundown. This works colorful affect and joyful bird/tree imagery stands in juxtapostion in tone from the cultural reference of racism of the past. Large text stating Get out brings new meaning to the work once one learns of deeper implications

Adam Parker Smith

Armory Off Site / Adam Parker Smith– is instinctively recognizable and bizarrely different. Working with a team of master carvers and the digital research teams at museums like the Uffizi—has rendered some of the greatest hits of Hellenic sculpture in 3D modelling programs. Then painstakingly chiseled out of a Carrara marble block an ancient stone draws a material through-line between the sculpture and Apollo of Belvedere, Bernini’s David, and others…

Presented at Wittenberg Triangle by The Hole located in the Bowery area of NYC in Lower Manhattan.

The Armory Show

In 1994, four New York art dealers had the ambitious goal of creating a new art fair to support their artists and attract global attention. They succeeded. The result was a groundbreaking cultural moment that has become vital to the New York art market and beyond. While much has changed over the years, our ingenuity and ambition have not. The Armory Show is a galvanizing force in the art world and essential to New York’s cultural landscape.
