Step into an adjacent room to find “SELF: The Art of Sena Burgundy Appau.” You will find six of Appau’s large-scale paintings completed in the last six months. His work relates to AfroFuturism, and to science fiction. Forceful figures with blue skin exist in dislocated, abstract environments. The blue “Na’vi” people in James Cameron’s movie, “Avatar,” come to mind. The masks that adorn Appau’s people don’t serve to protect against viruses as we know them. They seem to reflect the artist’s interest in identity, as jewelry functions. Flowers, like living necklaces, adorn them as well.
