RIP Mary Bauermeister (September 7th, 1934 Frankfurt am Main - March 2nd, 2023 Cologne)
Bauermeister was a Cologne-based artist and one of the founders of Fluxus. In 1960 Bauermeister rented an apartment in the Lintgasse 28 in Cologne and began organizing exhibitions, concerts and happenings between March 1960 and October 1961. These events belong to some of the first pre-fluxus events and greatly influenced many of the artists of the later Fluxus movement. Avant-garde poets, composers and visual artists such as George Maciunas, Wolf Vostell, Hans G. Helms, David Tudor, John Cage, Christo, George Brecht and Nam June Paik were invited by Bauermeister to present unconventional concerts of new music, readings, performances and exhibitions. Mary Bauermeister’s „pre-Fluxus“- activities greatly influenced the Cologne art scene. Rudolf Zwirner was motivated to move his gallery to Cologne partially by the scene which developed around the Lintgasse 28, Zwirner would go on to establish the Kölner Kunstmarkt in 1967, which then became Art Cologne.

Koelnmesse and the KunstBvDG (German association of galleries and art dealers) are very pleased to announce Monika Sprüth as the recipient of the ART COLOGNE Prize 2022, paying tribute to a gallery owner, who has set benchmarks for contemporary art mediation. Her presentations have been attracting the public to ART COLOGNE – and further international art trade fairs for decades. Monika Sprüth`s gallery was founded in Cologne in 1983. At the end of the 1990s, she entered into a partnership with Philomene Magers, has since operated as SPRUETHMAGERS and is considered one of the most important galleries worldwide. Her artists are represented in numerous private collections and public museums.

The ART COLOGNE Prize for exceptional performance in the communication of art is presented annually by Koelnmesse and the BVDG. The first ART COLOGNE Prize in the year 1988 went to Ileana Sonnabend, who had decisively shaped the American art market with her New York gallery since 1971. Since then, female gallerists, who have recognised and promoted the new artistic developments, have repeatedly been distinguished with the ART COLOGNE Prize, which is endowed with €10,000 in prize-money.
The presentation of this year`s ART COLOGNE Prize to Monika Sprüth will take place on Thursday, 17 November 2022 at 10am in the Historic Town Hall in Cologne.

COLLABORATIONS are curated projects of up to two galleries that promote collaboration between galleries and/or artists. Öktem Aykut (oktemaykut) and Philipp Zollinger (philippzollinger) will team up to show the work of Renée Levi.
For over thirty years #renée_levi has been questioning the medium of painting. She investigates colour, the application of paint, its body, and its space on various image carriers as well as in installations. She was born 1960, in Istanbul and grew up in Aargau. Today, she lives and works in Basel.

An examination of identity, gender, racism is a subject to a complex reinterpretation what role does the skin color lays and how does it still impact our feelings, perceptions when making in human relationships.
How has the political policies with the system build on color identity has been a pivotal validation on ethnic, racial, oppression, and segregation through discourses around value, taste, culture, methodology and deployment of color while race and class are still defined in black and white in large parts of society, a new consciousness shaped by social media and digitalization is increasingly shifting these conditional boundaries of gender and identity towards a new collectivity and solidarity.
As a black woman who has worked in fashion industry all her life, as a model and fashion influencer, MICHELLE ELIE is confronted with questions about age, body, and skin color as well as norms and stereotypes on daily basis.
In moments when many people feel the inequality and injustice of the ruling system, it is about a strong conviction in who you are and what you identify with. Who is afraid of black, white and beige?
