New works by Victoria Gitman will be on view with Garth Greenan Gallery at The Art Show hosted by the ADAA. ✨🪩
The small-scale paintings are loaded with nested paradoxes: they are astonishingly naturalistic yet compositionally abstract; analytical yet sensuous; prosaic yet ambitious. Each painting depicts a different sequined article of clothing. The compositions are tightly cropped, so that the brightly colored garments almost completely fill the picture plane—creating vivid, abstract patterns.

To create his nearly monochromatic, atmospheric canvases, John Zurier plays with the tone and dilution of his materials, explaining below:
"In getting a surface to work, scraping away material, removing color, I’m aiming for sensuality and the immaterial energy at the core of art. `For Mark (After Paul Celan)` is a double dedication: to my brother Mark and a reflection on a late untitled poem by Paul Celan. `Chisel off the bolts of light, / Dusk has the swimming word.`"
John Zurier’s solo show entitled “The Future of Ice,” includes new paintings and works on paper, and is on view through November 13.

"Pain-in-the-ass gray is very hard to come by," laughs #RichardDiebenkorn one day in October 1985. He is working on an image in the CrownPointPress printmaking studio. Collaging changes to see whether he would like to move his ideas onto copper plates. Layering. Rotating. Over again. So thick the image becomes heavy in the center. Eventually, the artist abandons the image, leaving it unfinished for a time before returning to the collage and signing it "RD 85."
.
Check out our stories later today to watch a video by Crown Point Press`s Founding Director Kathan Brown. It documents Diebenkorn working in the studio on the abandoned project as well as two other images he completed during two weeks in January 1986. At moments in the process, the image turns upside down and on its side. "It`s a very complex activity, believe me, and I don`t enjoy it all the time," says #Diebenkorn.
.
The collaged abstraction by Richard Diebenkorn is currently on view in New York at The_ADAA`s The Art Show, VanDorenWaxter Booth D16. November 2–6, 2022.

Mitchell-Innes & Nash is pleased to announce co-representation of the estate of Antonio Henrique Amaral (1935-2015). We will begin our new partnership by presenting a solo booth of paintings and drawings at the forthcoming ADAA Art Show. Join us at Booth B5 from November 3–6! ☁
Amaral is a key figure in Brazilian and Latin American art. He developed his signature style during the second half of the 20th Century, coming of age under the rule of the coup d’état and subsequent military dictatorship installed in Brazil in 1964.
His visceral and allegorical works deal with erotic desire, political violence and existential discontent which directly address threats to humanity such as authoritarianism, deforestation and unchecked capitalism. Because his message is delivered through a clear and graphic Pop lens, Amaral succeeds in seducing the eye while critiquing systems of oppression.
For this year’s edition of The Art Show, Mitchell-Innes & Nash will feature a solo booth devoted to Amaral’s work from the 1990s. It was during this decade that the artist expanded and reconfigured his iconography into more surreal territory which very much continues to speak to current political and environmental situations globally.
Mitchell-Innes & Nash jointly represents Antonio Henrique Amaral together with Casa Triângulo, São Paulo, Brazil.

OPEN TONIGHT FOR BENEFIT PREVIEW | ADAA: The Art Show - Booth D13 | November 1–5 • Eric Firestone Gallery is delighted to participate in the 2023 edition of the ADAA Show. The presentation includes the work of Anderson Pigatt (1928–2009), Ellsworth Ausby (1942–2001), Joe Overstreet (1933–2019), Thomas Sills (1914–2000), and Paul Waters (b. 1936). These artists were included in the following three historic exhibitions: “Afro-American Artists, New York and Boston” (The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, May–June 1970); “New Black Artists” (The Brooklyn Museum and Columbia University, New York, August–December 1969); “Black Artists: Two Generations” (Newark Museum, May–September 1971).
Edmund Gaither, the founding Director of the NCAAA Museum in Boston, and curator of Afro-American Artists, New York, and Boston, wrote that the exhibition “presents a rich, high-quality selection of works representing all of the directions that Afro-American artists are exploring.” He defined three categories: 1) artists belonging to the body of mainstream American art; 2) “Black art,” which is didactic, political work; and 3) Neo Africanism, which is rooted in the study of traditional African art. Among the participating artists were Ellsworth Ausby, Joe Overstreet, Thomas Sills, and Paul Waters.

FEAUTURED IN NEW YORK TIMES | ADAA: The Art Show - Booth D13 | November 1–5 • Eric Firestone Gallery’s presentation at The Art Show was recently featured in the New York Times in “The Art Show Highlights Masters — and Artists Under the Radar” by Martha Schwendener
“Eric Firestone has made a career of rescuing artists from the dustbin — or at least the margins — of art history, particularly New York in the late 20th-century. Here he’s featuring five who appeared in important exhibitions devoted to Black art in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Paul Waters’s canvases have a gorgeous, geometric simplicity, but the real standout is Anderson Pigatt, a self-taught sculptor who also worked as a restorer of antique furniture after studying cabinetmaking on the G.I. Bill. “In Honor of the Brothers and Sisters of Reclamation Site One” (1969) is a hulking monument made from a fallen oak tree in a Harlem park. The idea that wood has a spirit is deftly translated in this tough-but-tender memorial to civil rights activists.”
