The works of Henrik Simonsen connect the viewer with the mysterious and almost magical side of nature. While exacting in detail and technically virtuous his paintings are truly about the spirit behind that which man did not create. The craggy forms of his trees the rhythms of the leaves the detailed petals in his flowers are all a reminder of the natural world’s beauty; and yet they are not realistic or naturalistic works they are contemporary works that combine the strength and movement of abstract painting with an insight of nature’s rhythm and beauty.
“As an artist working alone in my studio I was fortunate to have my own space during the pandemic; but none of us exist in isolation. The influence from the outside world filtered through me onto the canvas. I became more aware of time than ever how we measure it and what it means to us. For me my experience of time altered stretched felt longer and more fragile. Everything slowed down and seemed less defined.
Many of the paintings in this exhibition originated from the observation of time. For example the four paintings that make up the season series demonstrate the change in the natural world that occurs during a year in Northern Europe while the works from the light series (Winter Light and “Green Light) aim to capture an ephemeral and brief moment.
As the world opened and scaled down on its restrictions my work also took on a renewed sense of space as it acquired layers of depth. This renewed sense of space is the source of the perceived three-dimensional quality that enhances the precise details that make up the elements in my work.” – Henrik Simonsen 2022

INFO
An exhibition of image-based works by Israeli-born NYC-based multidisciplinary artist Nir Hod on view from April 1 to April 21 2022. Akin to both daguerreotypes and the works of old masters this body of work presents new figurations in which the symbolic and figurative are fused together into abstract yet deeply human forms.
Hod’s latest exhibition explores notions of melancholy loss and remembrance to produce works that can’t quite be categorized as paintings. Hod’s creative practice always begins within the bounds of a chosen setting from which the artist conjures emotion and visual narrative. Abandoned institutions such as hospitals and churches provide an atmosphere instinctually congruous to the pondering of destruction and rebirth themes of which are foregrounded in his highly-interactive pieces.
Painting on oil canvases with layers of black green gray and chrome—and consequently peeling back said layers to expose flashes of light embedded within the darkness—each of Hod’s pieces undergo an extensive process of transformation before the desired narrative can be brought to life. Here compounds such as ammonia gasoline and various acids lend themselves to the evolution of the works by evoking sentiments of fragility and annihilation. The mirrored nature of the pieces works to place the viewer within the present moment ultimately moving the audience to consider the ephemeral nature of the human experience. The resulting works are surfaces of reflection and meditation—mutating pieces which become evermore figurative the closer one gets.
Analyzing notions of duality and artificiality Exile invites viewers to create novel narratives in sites of destruction. In the complex exercise that is the creation of these works Hod alchemizes what is dense and dangerous into something much more delicate. To look into the layers and see oneself is to approach with care.
ABOUT NIR HOD
Nir Hod began his career in video works in sculpture but is known for his high realism paintings. Hod studied at Jerusalem’s Bezalel Academy and New York’s Cooper Union School of Art. His work investigates old notions of hyper-seriousness and personal authenticity. Hod’s realistic takes on rakish narcissism examine androgyny identity sexual confusion and excess. As Richard Vine wrote in the catalogue for Hod’s survey exhibition at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art “From the beginning of his career Nir Hod has opposed the ideology that labels sumptuousness an esthetic sin. His work openly substitutes the pleasure principle and a fluid multiplicity of selves for the old notions of high seriousness and personal authenticity.”

Three Masters of the Print | Dürer Rembrandt and Picasso
This exhibition is intended to be like a music program that juxtaposes two of the greatest traditional composers with one of the most important of the moderns. In his day the German painter Albrecht Dürer accomplished the astonishing feat of bringing both the woodcut and the engraving to a level of achievement that arguably has never been equaled. In a similar fashion Rembrandt transformed etching with its superior responsiveness to the artist’s hand into a powerful expressive medium that effectively displaced engraving as the preferred technique for the printing of images. Finally the printed work of Picasso is a repository of both traditional and modern techniques like etching aquatint lithography and linocut in a way that reflects both the changing autobiographical nature of his art and his restless experimentation with new means of expression. This exhibition contains approximately thirty works from a private collection promised to the Norton that have been selected for their historical importance and outstanding quality. Viewers will have the rare opportunity to see not only excellent examples from the history of printmaking but will also be able to observe the way in which three of the greatest Western artists brought their transformative skill to bear on the printed image.

The Fisher Landau Family Collection | GROUP SHOW
A Remarkable Gathering: The Fisher Landau Family Collection comprises artworks by many of the most outstanding artists of the late-20th century and accounts for some of the finest examples of their work. The depth of this distinguished collection traces many of the concepts that have preoccupied modern and contemporary artists for decades. An international grouping of influential masters the collection includes the work of key modernists such as Pablo Picasso Georgia O’Keeffe and Piet Mondrian as well as Pop art icons Robert Indiana Jasper Johns and Andy Warhol. Further the collection’s adventurous spirit is revealed in the early representations of complex artistic movements such as Minimalism and conceptual art as seen through the works of Willem de Kooning Glenn Ligon Agnes Martin and Cy Twombly among many others. Collectively the exhibition gathers an excellent and diverse collection of art and its critical ideas.

The Howard and Judie Ganek Collection | GROUP SHOW
In the spring of 2018 the Norton Museum of Art formally announced the promised gift of an exceptional collection of contemporary art that Howard and Judie Ganek developed over the last four decades. The gift comprises over 100 paintings sculptures ceramics and photo-based works which will transform the Museum’s holdings in a manner comparable to the original gift of Museum Founder Ralph Norton. This exhibition offers a glimpse into their expansive collection featuring works by Matthew Barney Ken Price Gilbert & George Anselm Kiefer and Barbara Kruger among others. The Ganek’s interest in engaging with stimulating living artists and embracing art that is not easily understood has resulted in a dynamic collection that is underscored in this exhibition. It marks the second installation of their remarkable promised gift that first debuted in February 2019 and coincided with the Foster Partners transformation.

During his career Pousette-Dart created a lexicon of biomorphic and totemic forms that provided rich visual and symbolic sources that he would explore throughout his long career in a multitude of painterly approaches. He is recognized for his painting drawing photography and sculpture which are unified by his expressive use of gesture form and color. Never embracing action painting and instead pursuing his own aesthetic Pousette-Dart sought universal significance in his art expressed through nonobjective means.
Pousette-Dart’s work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art (1963 1974 1998); Museum of Modern Art (1969); The Metropolitan Museum of Art (1997); and Solomon R. Recent monographic presentations have been held at the Philadelphia Museum of Art (2014); The Drawing Center New York (2015); Kettle’s Yard University of Cambridge United Kingdom (2018); and Bowdoin College Museum of Art Brunswick Maine (2018).

This photo printing process creates prints that present the look of analog photography while relying on new standards for image printing using innovative technology. Freed from the limitations of paper – and the need to use protective glass or Plexi – a picture can have vivid colors and sharp definition.
Opting to use this technique of infusing dyes directly onto specially coated metal prints helps create photographs that become bold striking images with beautiful clarity and exceptional quality. The celebrated photographers in this exhibition take advantage of the immediacy of the sublimation process.

Taglialatella Galleries will be the next stop for the vaunted WEST tour an exciting collection of original paintings by British contemporary artist Russell Young. First exhibited at the Modern Art Museum in Shanghai China – followed by Marfa TX and Los Angeles CA – WEST will make its way to Taglialatella’s flagship location in the Chelsea arts district for its New York City debut.
WEST taps into primal instincts and grandiose American dreams. Living and painting on what Young calls the “edge of America” this body of work looks upon wide open vistas and imagery aimed to expand understandings of freedom danger and possibility.
The journey towards these vistas begins in the anamorphic widescreens of Western films that Young watched growing up in Northern England. These fantasies eventually led him to America where he has roamed ever since unafraid to embody a land full of contradictions.
In WEST Young both venerates and pulls apart “Wild West” mythology to reveal the many prisms that underscore the particularly American need for reinvention even when it sacrifices truth. Young makes no such sacrifice; instead he holds all the things we choose to love and choose to erase in equal measure.
The series features imagery references and obsessions of Young’s own world built within the larger framework of the American drama. The spaghetti westerns he watched in his youth NASCAR racers before they were safely regulated 70s big wave Hawaiian surf photography California girls Hells Angels nickel plated revolvers bison rodeos the Marlboro Cowboy before he was commercialized into oblivion Native American chiefs before they too were almost driven into oblivion—they all debut in Young’s quest to confront and interrogate the idealization of the American Southwest.
The breadth of this ever-expanding body of work is matched only by Young’s impulse to venture into the deserts and forests and oceans of America to go as far west as possible.
