This familiar, intimate portrait of Barack and Michelle Obama by Mariana Cook, was made long before he became president, while he was a community organizer in Chicago. Cook made this photograph as a part of a book she was working on, titled “Couples: Speaking from the Heart.” Ironically, this particular image did not make it into the final book. It was filed away until 2009, the year Obama was inaugurated for his first term as the President of the United States. The historic image will be offered by Lee Marks Fine Art in the upcoming auction “Four Decades: In Celebration of AIPAD,” presented by Sothebys from December 15 through 21, 2020.

After a pandemic-induced hiatus, AIPAD is back in New York, and I had an early look yesterday morning. I’ll say this: It was good to be back in the hum of the photo community. More intimate than in previous years (that’s a good thing), there’s much to see. Here, a few that caught my eye.
1. Louis Faurer at the Stephen Daiter Gallery. I’m a fan of Faurer’s brilliant black-and-white work, but this just sparkled.
2. Could not stop looking at Dawoud Bey’s “A Young Man Resting on an Exercise Bike, Amityville, NY, 1988.” A gorgeous print. Do not miss. Also at the Stephen Daiter Gallery. (StephenDaiterGallery)
3 & 4. Karen Knorr’s work is like—I dunno—Nat Geo meets Architectural Digest. Every picture surprises. See it at the Augusta Edwards booth. (augustaedwardsfineart)
5. A former ballet dancer, Colin Jones began bringing his camera on tour. One thing led to another. Jones was new to me and the work is just great. See it at the Obscura Gallery booth. (obscuragallery)
6. Tom Wood rode the bus all day every day for years, getting off here and there to make portraits. I just love this. At Augusta Edwards Fine Art.
7. If you don’t know Larry Towell’s work, I suggest you dive deep and dive now. At the Stephen Bulger Gallery booth, they have a handful of Towell’s stunning images from his time with the Mennonites in the ‘90s. Every picture here is a winner. Image courtesy of Magnum Photos (stephenbulgergallery)
8. I love this sooo much. John Humble has been stalking the streets of LA since the mid-70s and bringing back colorful odes to its architecture. You’ll find this at Joseph Bellow’s booth, where there’s also a beautiful collection of Wayne Sorce prints and a display of Gary Krueger’s street work, which I featured a few weeks back. I’m delighted to announce representation by the Etherton Gallery in Tucson, Arizona 🇺🇸 🌵
There’s a Pop-Up Gallery Exhibition `Paul Hart : The Fens` coming up soon, but in the meantime here’s a selection of some of the pictures I’ve been making as gelatin silver prints for the gallery inventory.
Many of you will know this wonderful gallery in the Southwest, currently celebrating their 40th year in a new space in the heart of Tucson’s Barrio Viejo ...
"Since 1981, Etherton Gallery showcased the icons of the history of photography as well as the contemporary artists changing its course. The gallery’s programming highlights the most important figures in the history of the medium, and remains dedicated to making great works of photography accessible to novices and experienced collectors alike.
A champion of the arts of the Southwest and in particular Tucson, the gallery also exhibits top local and regional artists working in a variety of media, and presents free exhibition programs that address related local and national issues. Etherton Gallery is a long-standing member of the Association of International Photography Art Dealers (AIPAD) and participates in fine art photography fairs including the AIPAD Photography Show NY, Classic Photographs LA, and Paris Photo."

The People`s Princess, this image was made by Yousuf Karsh at the height of her acting career in 1956. During their sitting, Hepburn shared her harrowing experiences during the Second World War. Years later, when Karsh photographed Chairman Brezhnev at the Kremlin, he agreed "only if you make me as beautiful as Audrey Hepburn."

One of our favorite "Dunes" by the prolific Brett Weston. A bit of history behind the photographer - In 1929, Brett and his father moved to Carmel, California where the Weston family, including Brett’s three brothers, would maintain homes for the rest of their lives. At various times, Brett Weston also lived in Los Angeles where he had his own studio and portrait business, and in New York where he was stationed in the army. He later traveled extensively on personal photographic trips to South America, Europe, Japan, Alaska, and Hawaii. Following a 1947 Guggenheim Fellowship which he used to photograph along the East Coast, he moved to Carmel to assist his ailing father, and pursue his fine art work, including wood sculpture that was influenced by his own photographs. brettwestonarchive
